Dictation
Speak into the text field you are using.
How to use it
- Focus a text field.
- Start recording with your dictation key. The default is
RIGHTCTRL. - Speak, then stop recording.
- Wait for TypeAside to transcribe, clean up, and paste the text.
Hold or toggle
In Settings → Shortcuts → Dictate, choose Hold or Toggle. This mode also applies to the Command binding.
- Hold, the default: hold the key while speaking and release it to finish.
- Toggle: press once to start, then press again to finish.
Very short accidental taps are ignored. Press the cancel shortcut, ESCAPE by default, to cancel recording or pending processing.
The overlay and sounds
The overlay shows recording and processing states. Settings → Behavior → Sound cues controls recording cues. Lower media volume reduces media volume during recording on Linux through wpctl. Media ducking has no effect on macOS or Windows; sound cues still play.
Paste again
Use Paste last, LEFTALT+LEFTSHIFT+V by default, to paste your latest dictation into the currently focused app. Press Enter after paste is optional and off by default.
Leave automatic Enter off in chat apps until you are comfortable reviewing the result.
