RIGHTCTRL is the right Control key. RIGHTALT is the right Alt key, or right Option on macOS.

How to use it

  1. Focus the app where you want text.
  2. Hold the dictation key while you speak.
  3. Release it and wait for the result.

The Hold / Toggle setting beside Dictate applies to both Dictate and Command. In Toggle mode, press the same key again to stop.

Changing the hotkey

  1. Open Settings → Shortcuts.
  2. Click the binding beside Dictate or Command.
  3. Press your chosen key or combination. Use the recorder to capture it.

Key name rules

Bindings in the configuration use + between keys, for example CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE.

  • CTRL, ALT, SHIFT, and META accept either side.
  • LEFTCTRL, RIGHTCTRL, LEFTALT, RIGHTALT, and the corresponding Shift and Meta names keep their side.
  • META means Command on macOS and the Windows key on Windows. On Linux it is usually Super.
  • Existing Linux KEY_ prefixes remain valid.

The macOS and Windows recorder saves generic modifiers. Physical letter positions follow the standard US key table on macOS. Unsupported native key names produce an error at startup.

Choosing keys

Choose a key present on your keyboard that you rarely use alone. Check it in the apps you dictate into. Avoid combinations reserved by your desktop or frequently used by your editor. Right Alt may also act as AltGr on some layouts.

If your keyboard has no right Control key, record a different binding before you start dictating.

Troubleshooting

Check that TypeAside is running, the binding matches your keyboard, and your operating system has granted keyboard access. On Linux, evdev access is required. On macOS, check Accessibility and Input Monitoring, then restart TypeAside.
